Overview of Dr. Johnson
Dr. Romaine F. Johnson, MD MPH FACS, is Associate Dean for Student Affairs at the Peter O’Donnell Jr. School of Public Health and Professor in the Department of Health Data Science & Biostatistics at UT Southwestern Medical Center. He concurrently serves as Professor in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, where he holds the Beth and Marvin C. “Cub” Culbertson Endowed Professorship in Pediatric Otolaryngology and serves as Director of Quality & Safety.
Dr. Johnson earned his MD from Drexel University School of Medicine and completed his otolaryngology residency at Baylor College of Medicine, followed by a pediatric otolaryngology fellowship at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital. He holds an MPH from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, reflecting his commitment to population health and health equity.
As a nationally recognized leader in pediatric otolaryngology, Dr. Johnson directs the Pediatric Voice and Swallowing Clinic at Children’s Health and previously served as Medical Director of the Children’s Health Airway Management Program. His research focuses on pediatric tracheostomy outcomes, health disparities, and quality improvement, with over 110 peer-reviewed publications. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of Laryngoscope Investigative Otolaryngology and is Principal Investigator on CDC-funded research examining juvenile onset recurrent respiratory papillomatosis.
Dr. Johnson’s dedication to diversity and inclusion is exemplified through his leadership roles, including Past President of the Harry Barnes Medical Society. He has received numerous honors, including the D Magazine Best Doctors designation for over 15 years and multiple Distinguished Service Awards from the American Academy of Otolaryngology. His innovative work in surgical quality improvement and multidisciplinary care has established new standards for pediatric airway management nationwide.
