Ronald Cowan MD PhD, FAPA

Summary

• Dr. Cowan completed his PhD at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in the Department of Anatomy and Neurobiology with a focus on in vivo intracellular neurophysiology of neocortex. He is a graduate of the Weill Cornell Medical School and completed his internship in Internal Medicine at the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and residency in Psychiatry at The McLean Hospital/Harvard Medical School. There, he received the Livingston Award and the Dupont-Warren Fellowship to support training and research in neuroimaging. He led a program in neuroimaging research at Vanderbilt University prior to his current role. He is currently the Harrison Distinguished Professor and Chair of the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN and co-director of the health science center's Center for Addiction Medicine. Dr. Cowan serves as a member of the Brain & Behavior Research Foundation (BBRF) Scientific Council, in the area of Addiction; as a member of the State of Tennessee's Opioid Abatement Council; as a member of the Program Committee for the College on Problems of Drug Dependence (CPDD); as a member of the Education and Training Committee for the American College of Neuropsychopharmacology (ACNP); and as a member of the Council on Medical Education and Lifelong Learning for the American Psychiatric Association (APA). He is the current president of the Tennessee Psychiatric Association. The Department of Psychiatry at UTHSC is actively recruiting new clinical and research faculty and is well poised to embrace emerging advances in neuroscience, artificial intelligence, genetics, evolutionary psychiatry, and structural and social determinants of health. The department places strong value on compassion and empathy, and patient-centered approaches to care, and greatly values diversity across all areas. Dr. Cowan's clinical interests include CL psychiatry, depression, pain, dementia, and addiction.
