He is a professor of medicine and anesthesiology at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, where he serves as an attending intensivist and medical director of the transplant/oncology infectious diseases program. He received his medical degree from the University of Washington School of Medicine. He served for 22 years on active duty in the United States Navy, with wartime deployments to the North Arabian Sea, Persian Gulf, and Afghanistan, as well as overseas service in Latin America conducting vaccine research, and retiring with the rank of Captain (O-6) in 2021.
