Summary

  • I have over 20 years of experience in Neurology and movement disorders. I am trained in Deep Brain Stimulation for movement disorders and in the use of Botulinum toxins for various dystonia. My major focus is clinical care of patients with complex movement disorders, clinical trials in Parkinson disease, education and training at medical student, resident and fellowship level. My philosophy for patient care has been to involve the patient and family in the multidisciplinary care using state of the art evaluation and management approaches. I am medical director of the neuro-modulation network for deep brain stimulation surgery for movement disorders.

I have been an NIH investigator on two major clinical studies for studying biomarkers in Parkinson disease and for identifying neuroprotective therapies in Parkinson disease. I have lead 35 plus clinical trials investigating various agents for management of Parkinson disease and other movement disorders.

I am a book co-editor of a handbook on movement disorders published in 2011. I am an ad-hoc reviewer for numerous neurology journals; Movement disorders, JAMA Neurology, PLOS one etc. We just published a new book with Oxford University Press, titled: Deep Brain Stimulation, A Case Based Approach, OUP, July 2020 with Michael S. Okun and Pravin Khemani as co-editors.

Women in leadership still face ample challenges and it is my goal to bridge the divide and look at ways to be an exemplary leader irrespective of age, race or gender. Academic medicine faces significant challenges with constant pressure for productivity with less and less time for academic pursuits including research and creative teaching strategies to improve education. Wellness and burnout issues are being discussed and we need clear vision and strategies to lead the next generation of academicians and physicians to have a meaningful work-life balance yet be able to reach heights of success in patient care, education and training.
