  • Dr. VanHaerents is an Associate Professor in neurology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and a neurologist on staff at Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he is part of the interdisciplinary care team at the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center. His practice focuses on the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy with particular emphasis on the treatment of medically intractable seizures. His clinical research interests include neurostimulation, identification and treatment of Autoimmune Epilepsy/Encephalitis, and New-Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE). Additionally, Dr. VanHaerents is deeply invested in medical education and currently serves as the Neurology Clerkship Director.

    He was elected a member of Alpha Omega Alpha national honor society at Wayne State University School of Medicine in Detroit, Michigan where he received his medical degree. He completed a neurology residency and neurophysiology fellowship in epilepsy at Harvard Medical School / Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston, Massachusetts. He joined Northwestern Medicine in 2014.

    Dr. VanHaerents encourages his patients to take an active role in their care with a patient-centered approach. He believes that the physician should provide a patient with appropriate information from clinical experience and medical literature, and together they can decide how to best apply this information and create a treatment plan.

    Dr. VanHaerents's practice focuses on the medical and surgical treatment of epilepsy. His clinical research interests include neurostimulation, identification and treatment of Autoimmune Epilepsy/Encephalitis, and New-Onset Refractory Status Epilepticus (NORSE).

    Additionally, Dr. VanHaerents is deeply invested in medical education and currently serves as the Neurology Clerkship Director, Co-module Leader of the M2 Neuroscience course, and Chair-Elect of the Consortium of Neurology Clerkship Directors at the American Academy of Neurology.
