- Dr. Thomas Buchanan leads a research group that has for more than 30 years conducted field-leading research into the etiology, pathogenesis, genetics and prevention of gestational and type 2 diabetes, with a focus on diabetes in Hispanic Americans. His work has garnered him many awards, including the Norbert Freinkel Award and Distinguished Clinical Science Award from the American Diabetes Association, the Mayo H. Soley Award from the Western Society for Clinical Investigation, and election to membership in the prestigious research society, the Association of American Physicians. In 2017 Dr. Buchanan received the USC Associates Award for Creativity in Research, the highest honor the university faculty bestows on its members for distinguished intellectual achievements. In 2022 Dr. Buchanan was appointed USC University Professor, a title awarded selectively to Professors who have brought special renown to the university through their interdisciplinary accomplishments.
During his career, Dr. Buchanan has published more than 225 peer-reviewed scientific papers and brought to USC more than $278 million in extramural research funding as principal investigator or program director.
