Summary

  • I am a clinical pharmacist who is passionate about helping others live healthier lives. My specific area of expertise is diabetes management but extends to other chronic diseases such as hypertension and dyslipidemia. I find it highly rewarding to help empower patients to take control of their health through adopting healthier lifestyles and using medications appropriately.

When I think back on my career journey, I recognize that each step along the way, although not always as I expected, has made me a better professional. Let's start at the beginning... I loved playing school as a little girl. Each afternoon I would set up my classroom and use the back of my grandmother's front door as my chalk board. It's actually surprising that I chose to go pharmacy school instead of becoming a teacher. After graduating pharmacy school and joining a community retail pharmacy, I thought my dream of teaching was gone. Yet, time and time again, I found myself continually learning and seeking opportunities to educate my patients, guide student learning while on rotation, and teach pharmacists new skills. In this retail environment, I spearheaded the immunization, medication therapy management, and health testing services. Little did I know that years later I would find myself moving from the retail pharmacy setting to pharmacy education.

Pharmacy education gave me the opportunity to really teach. I'd like to think that perhaps each student carries a piece of what they've learned from me, in or out of the classroom, into their practice and care of patients. In this way, I believe I have actually expanded my reach for helping patients.

As a pharmacy practice educator, I have had clinical practice responsibilities in addition to academic expectations. Beyond educating students, one of the most fulfilling areas of my career has been building my skills in chronic disease management and serving as a board-certified diabetes care and education specialist.
