Brewerton completed medical education at Tulane University School of Medicine and further training at the University of California, San Francisco (residency), NIH Clinical Center (research fellowship), and the Medical University of South Carolina (child-adolescent psychiatry fellowship). Brewerton has been actively involved in academia as a professor at the Medical University of South Carolina since 1987, and has also served as an executive medical director and consultant for various institutions focusing on the treatment of eating and related disorders. Brewerton's experience includes working on conditions such as eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, binge eating disorder and ARFID, obesity, ultra-processed food addiction, PTSD, dissociative disorders, mood disorders, anxiety disorders, and substance use disorders. He has published extensively with over 200 peer reviewed publications and book chapters. He has also edited two books, including a textbook on eating disorders, substance use disorders and addictions. Brewerton's recent works focus on eating disorders and associated traumas and their effects and treatments, including with psychedelic agents. Brewerton has received numerous awards, including MUSC teaching awards and the Craig Johnson Award for Clinical Practice and Training. He has also held leadership roles such as president of the South Carolina Psychiatric Association. He is Executive Producer of the full length documentary film, Sylvia: The Wood Nymph, which is about his first case of dissociative identity disorder and psychiatry’s history of the denial of childhood sexual abuse and its effects.
