Summary

  • I am a psychiatrist & a psychological anthropologist, currently seeing patients in adult psychiatry, HIV psychiatry, & dual diagnosis, based in the Dept of Family Medicine at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. I teach behavioral medicine to Family Medicine residents and principles of psychodynamic psychotherapy to Psychiatry Residents. I am also affiliated with the New Center for Psychoanalysis in Los Angeles, where I am a member of the committee for the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Program (PPP) and teach a module on gender & sexuality issues in psychotherapy.

My dissertation in psychological anthropology at UCSD examined depression, alcoholism, and sexual identity processes among gay and bisexual men in Prague, Czech Republic. In 2011 I completed residency in adult psychiatry at UCLA-NPI, and then a fellowship in Addiction Medicine through the Dept of Family Medicine. I have two long-term ethnographic projects on sexual identity, particularly in relation to mental health and sexual health. One is in conjunction with Petr Prokopík in Prague, bridging my earlier ethnographic work with surveys we conducted in 2006 and 2011 to better understand why HIV rates are now rising in Czech Republic. The other is a mixed-methods project in Los Angeles since 2011. It examines several groups of men who have sex with men (MSM) who do NOT identify as "gay", in order to better understand their health and mental health concerns and challenges to engaging them in HIV risk-reduction efforts.

Clinically my interests are in HIV psychiatry, substance abuse, personality disorders, and behavioral medicine. My research interests are in sexual identity, culture & personality, and human development/sexuality over the lifespan. I previously did some work with eating disorders and I continue to be interested in nutrition, obesity, and disordered eating, as well as American folk beliefs around nutrition and medicine, though I am not actively working in these areas.
