I am a nurse practitioner (NP) who cares for adult patients who have undergone cardiac catheterization/angioplasty or open heart surgery. I collaborate closely with cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons. Our patients come directly from the cardiac catheterization lab or the operating room and remain on the Cardiovascular Unit until discharge. I work with other NPs and RNs. In addition to cardiologists and CT surgeons, I regularly work with physician specialists (e.g., anesthesiologist, intensivist, pulmonologist, nephrologist, hematologist, neurologist). I also work closely with pharmacists, case managers, social workers, respiratory therapists, and physical therapists.
I am responsible for admitting and discharging patients from the unit. I manage up 6 patients per shift, many of whom have complex medical/surgical presentations. I am responsible for assessing and manageing patient progress status-post cardiac catheterization/angioplasty and open heart surgery, including ordering medications, labs/diagnostics, and treatments. I handle complex tasks involving advanced hemodynamic monitoring, central lines, intra-aortic balloon pump, Impella, arterial/venous sheaths, chest tubes, mechanical ventilation, and temporary pacing.
