Summary

• I am a board-certified cardiothoracic surgeon specializing in pediatric and Congenital heart disease. I have devoted my career to assisting in developing pediatric cardiac services in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC). In 1999, an Endowed Professorship, the Paul Nemir, Jr., M.D., was created at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The Professorship was explicitly funded to allow me to pursue assisting LMIC full-time. I founded 2 501 (c) (3) organizations to fund teams of pediatric cardiac specialists to travel to LMIC to provide clinical services, education, experience, and training in pediatric heart disease. Our first team trip was to Croatia in April 1993. Since then, we have made over 500 trips to 60 institutions in 36 countries, operating on over 10,000 children and training hundreds of surgeons, anesthesiologists, perfusionists, intensivists, and nurses caring for children with heart disease. The programs we have assisted over the years now provide 10,000 operations annually.
