Previously, he served as an instructor through to professor at Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine from 1980-2007; Chair of the Department of Neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 2007-2018 and Professor of Neurology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 2008-2022. His research focuses on cerebrovascular disease, with several recent publications in highly regarded journals, such as JAMA and the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Psychiatry.
