The NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital was one of the first surgical teaching hospitals in the United States. NYP Brooklyn Methodist’s Department of Surgery was founded by a pioneer surgeon, Lewis S. Pilcher, M.D., who also founded the Annals of Surgery. More than 28,000 surgical procedures are performed annually in the Hospital’s surgical suite, which includes 16 operating rooms, two special procedure rooms for endoscopy, and two cardiothoracic operating rooms. The general surgical residents are able to provide patient care in the subspecialties. For transplantation, residents rotate to Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan. The Department of Surgery has a well-organized teaching schedule. This includes conferences and rounds given by the chair and the faculty. There are approximately 10 hours of weekly formal surgical conferences that include professorial rounds, surgical grand rounds, morbidity and mortality conferences, journal club, quality and outcome seminars, subspecialty seminars, and service rounds.
