The Medical Genetics Residency program at the University of Michigan is a clinical training program consisting of 18 months of clinical rotations, including inpatient and outpatient experiences. The remaining 6 months of residency training is dedicated to developing basic or clinical research skills and educational teaching skills. Each resident develops a plan and identifies a mentor for scholarly activity with the help of the program director. Residents do not have in-house call and the responsibilities are in conformity with the regulations for time off and call responsibilities. Residents develop procedure andresearch skills through a variety of experiences provided by the Genetics division and the Departments ofPediatrics and Human Genetics. All clinical activities are supervised by faculty. The volume of patientsseen by genetics residents vastly exceeds the logbook requirements for ABMGG Certification. We haveboth a 2-year categorical program and a 4-year combined Pediatrics-Medical Genetics program.
