Overview of Dr. Smith

Dr. Dennis C. Smith received his BS in Chemical Engineering at M.I.T., in Cambridge, MA and worked as a chemical engineer in the air separation industry for several years before going to medical school at Rutgers in New Jersey. He then did his general surgical residency at UAB in Birmingham, AL.

He has been involved in bariatric surgery since 1997, and has done laparoscopic bariatric surgery since 1998, including his first laparoscopic Duodenal Switch procedure in 1999. From 2000 to 2015 Dr. Smith served as the Medical Director of the Bariatric Surgery Program for the WellStar Health System in Marietta, GA. In March, 2015 Dr. Smith joined the Center for Metabolic and Obesity Surgery and the Obesity and Metabolism Institute at AdventHealth Celebration Hospital in Celebration, FL.

Having been involved in the development and evolution of the laparoscopic technique of the Duodenal Switch, he continues to have a strong interest in metabolic bariatric surgery.

Dr. Smith performs all the major bariatric procedures done in the US, including the Sleeve Gastrectomy, the RNY Gastric Bypass, and the Duodenal Switch procedures. He also performs revisions of prior bariatric procedures. Dr. Smith will take on the care of patients who have had bariatric surgery elsewhere in the US.

Dr. Smith has served on various committees over the years with the ASMBS and SAGES, and now serves as a site surveyor for the MBSAQIP accreditation program.
