He currently serves as Professor & Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery at UAMS and Surgical Director of Heart Transplantation & MCS/LVAD in the Baptist Heart Failure & Transplant Institute.


    Dr. Bhama has trained at several world-renowned institutions around the country. He graduated with High Honors from The University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and received his medical doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. His postdoctoral education includes completion of general surgery residency at Baylor College of Medicine and thoracic surgery residency at George Washington University Medical Center & Johns Hopkins University. He then pursued advanced cardiac surgical training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester followed by fellowship in cardiothoracic transplantation and ventricular assist devices at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, one of the worlds busiest transplant centers.

    Dr. Bhama is the author of over 200 peer-review abstracts, journal articles, and book chapters. He is a Diplomat of the American Board of Surgery & the American Board of Thoracic Surgery and member of numerous professional societies including the highly regarded American Association of Thoracic Surgeons (AATS). Dr. Bhama is also recognized as a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in Cardiothoracic Surgery based upon peer nomination.

    Dr. Bhama’s clinical interests are in heart & lung transplantation, LVAD, MCS/ECMO, mitral and complex multi-valve procedures, arrhythmia surgery, minimally invasive surgery, and structural heart disease including TAVR & MitraClip.

    Dr. Bhama's research focuses on clinical outcomes in cardiac surgery and medical device innovation. Dr. Bhama is the Principle Investigator and Medical Director of the Bhama -Ratner Artificial Heart & MCS Advancement (BRAHMA) Laboratory.
