He completed his fellowship in Pediatric Pulmonology at the University of Arizona (year 1), Montreal Children's Hospital (years 2-3) and research at McGill University (year 4), a residency in Pediatrics at SUNY Upstate Medical University, and graduated from University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1979. He practiced at Johns Hopkins Children's Center from 1987-2000 and was the Director of Pediatric Pulmonology and Sleep Medicine at Arkansas Children's Hospital from 2000 - 2024. Dr. Carroll is currently Professor of Pediatrics and Physiology & Cell Biology at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. He retired from clinical medicine in 2024 and currently collaborates on several research projects including lung developmental defects caused by type I collagen mutations in osteogenesis imperfecta and quantifying the effect of biomechanical sudden unexpected infant death (SUID) risk factors on infant respiration.
