Summary
- As a first-generation American, I learned the value of hard work from my parents. My father left Ecuador and arrived in the U.S. with only $54 in his pocket, yet he successfully opened his own business that continues to flourish. His work ethic and dedication, as well as the emphasis placed on education in my youth, drove me to become the first person in my family to graduate college. Today, I am a humble yet proud Latino man who challenges the stereotypes of my culture. At the same time, I embrace the positive impact my background has on my career. For example, speaking Spanish during my rotations in Los Angeles allowed me to bring personalized care to many patients. I am now eager to begin a surgical residency and prove myself an asset to my patients and colleagues. As an advocate for other Latinos seeking to transcend stereotypes, I will bring diversity to my residency program and be a voice for minority peers and patients. My background will enable me to help colleagues understand how to approach patients of color and actively reduce racial disparities in healthcare.
