Summary

  • I am a Professor of Surgery and the Chief of Endocrine Surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, Illinois. Following general surgery training at the University of Illinois, I completed the Endocrine Surgery Fellowship at the University of California San Francisco with Dr. Orlo Clark. I joined the faculty at Northwestern University in 2004 and became the Director of Endocrine Surgery in 2006. My clinical areas of expertise are thyroid cancer, thyroid nodules, and hyperparathyroidism. I routinely perform cervical ultrasound and fine needle aspiration biopsy in the clinic. In the operating room I perform minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, thyroidectomy for cancer, Graves' disease, and goiter, and neck dissection for thyroid cancer. I lead the thyroid cancer tumor board for Northwestern Medicine. I conduct outcomes research primarily through decision analysis, patient-reported outcomes surveys, and economic analysis. I am a member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network Thyroid Cancer Guidelines Committee, was a coauthor of the 2009 International Workshop Guidelines on Asymptomatic Primary Hyperparathyroidism and the 2018 AAES Guidelines for the Definitive Treatment of Primary Hyperparathyroidism.
