Overview of Dr. Thompson
Dr. Jennifer Mariko Thompson is a double board-certified physician in both pediatrics and adolescent medicine. She has won multiple awards for her teaching skills within medical education and for providing compassionate and safe patient care. She is a proud member of the Gold Humanism Honor Society and a finalist for the Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award.
Dr. Thompson's passion for medical education has led her to move back home to Tampa to become a trailblazer. As a GME faculty physician, she started BayCare’s first ever adolescent medicine clinic and is currently their pediatric residency program's adolescent medicine rotation director. She practices within Tampa's BayCare Medical Group (BMG) where she sees patients from 8 to 21 years old, addressing gynecologic concerns such as menstrual issues and contraception. She is certified in placing, removing, and reinserting Nexplanons.
For Florida International University Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine (FIU HWCOM), she continues to serve as an adjunct lecturer, academic advisor, admissions committee interviewer, and clinical instructor. She led the development of FIU HWCOM's pediatric clinical skills capstone course and has been the lead instructor for it since its inaugural year. She is also a content contributor and editor for Pediatrics Board Review (PBR) working on both the core and MOCA-Peds study guides. Her academic work includes multiple award-winning research and narrative medicine publications, as well as presentations at national conferences, including the Society for Adolescent Health and Medicine (SAHM).
During her medical training, she was featured on CBS Miami and FIU News for her volunteer work as “Dr. Spider-Man,” providing bedside “consults” to uplift patients in PICU and the oncology floor.
Dr. Thompson is bilingual, with native proficiency in English and Japanese. She has worked at St. Luke’s International Hospital in Tokyo, Japan, as both a medical student and resident physician.
