Summary
- Dr. Stanberry is the Associate Dean for International Programs, Director of the Programs in Global Health and Co-Director of the Program in Vaccine Education at Columbia University’s Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons.
His previous positions include Chairman of Pediatrics, Columbia University (2008-2018); Chairman of Pediatrics and Director, Sealy Center for Vaccine Development, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (2000–2008); and the Albert Sabin Professor of Pediatrics and Director of Infectious Diseases at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center (1995–2000).
Dr. Stanberry received M.D. and Ph.D. (Pharmacology) from the University of Illinois. His postgraduate medical training was in Pediatrics, Infectious Diseases, and Virology at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School and University of Utah. Dr. Stanberry is an authority on viral diseases including emerging infectious diseases, perinatal infections, and vaccine and antiviral drug development.
He has served on numerous advisory boards and review panels including serving as chair of the Vaccine Study Section and the Pediatrics Review Panel at NIH. His research funding has come from the NIH, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, numerous vaccine, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
Dr. Stanberry has authored over 200 scientific articles and authored or edited nine books including “Vaccines for Biodefense and Emerging and Neglected Diseases, (1st edition 2009, 2nd edition anticipated 2020), “Understanding Modern Vaccines” (2011) and “Viral Infections of Humans: Epidemiology and Control,” (5th edition 2014, 6th edition is currently in production).
His current work focuses on the preparedness of children’s hospitals globally to prevent, detect, and respond to infections with pandemic potential, the effects of extreme heat on children's health in Africa and scalably approaches to addressing vaccine hesitancy.
