- Dr. Mark Balles is a retired retina surgeon living in Falmouth, ME and is affiliated with Maine Medical Center and the Tufts Medical School. He received his training in Vitreo-retinal diseases and surgery at Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and his medical degree from State University of New York Upstate Medical University. He is a graduate of Amherst College, where he majored in Physics. His medical career spanned almost 4 decades, during which time he became Director of the Retina Service at the University of Minnesota and founded the Retina Center of Maine, pioneering advanced Vitreoretinal surgery in an outpatient setting in Southern Maine. He was Principal Investigator on several NIH sponsored clinical trials including ones investigating best treatments for Diabetic Retinopathy, Endophthalmitis, and Retinopathy of Prematurity. He was an Investigator in the Ganciclovir Implant study, the first successful implantable intraocular drug delivery device. In clinical practice, he specialized in diagnosis and treatment of retinal diseases, including complex retinal detachment, consultation for vision loss of unknown etiology, diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, macular hole, macular pucker, complications of cataract surgery, retinal vein occlusion, pediatric retinal diseases and injuries, and vitreomacular traction.
