  • --Certified in Functional Medicine (in 2021) through Institute for Functional Medicine, ifm.org. Exploring root causes of chronic diseases and addressing them through diet, lifestyle, and nutritional support, with special interest in chronic eye diseases.

    --Comprehensive ophthalmologist and public health activist, moved to Portland, Oregon in 2017 after spending 7 years in China assisting the development of rural eye care in several provinces. Prior to moving to China, on the faculty of Northwestern University Department of Ophthalmology for 23 years.

    --One of the co-founders of Health for Humanity, www.healthforhumanity.us, a not-for-profit charitable organization; served as the organization’s Executive Director for 17 years. Provided administrative oversight for all HH projects worldwide, while representing the organization at annual meetings of WHO with non-governmental organizations committed to the elimination of avoidable blindness. --Obtained and administered international training grants for HH, did field work in 6 countries, and recruited eye professionals to advance retina, glaucoma, cornea, and pediatric sub-specialty care. --Developed leadership training program to complement technical training to improve systems for eye care.

    --Co-founded Vision in Practice, a not-for-profit organization that has helped rural eye hospitals in China raise the standard of eye care and capacity for elimination of avoidable blindness using the combined approach (surgical/clinical/administrative training with values-based leadership training).

    --Leadership training workshops for WHO’s Good Governance in Medicines (GGM) Programme in Amman, Jordan and Geneva, Switzerland as well as workshops for the International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness (IAPB).

    --Co-authored: Transformative Leadership: Developing the Hidden Dimension and its study guide, Transformative Leadership: Mastering the Hidden Dimension.
