Summary

  • Currently I am a Professor of Clinical Pediatrics in the Division of Infectious Diseases at the University of California San Diego, School of Medicine and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego. I am director of the UCSD-Baja California Perinatal HIV Program in charge of conducting clinical research and clinical mentoring in Tijuana, Baja California. I am Board certified in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and have over 20 years of experience as pediatric infectious diseases, tropical medicine and HIV medicine consultant. I have conducted clinical and research mentoring in Mexico, South Africa, Mozambique and Peru. I am member of the National institute of Health sponsored International Maternal Pediatric Adolescent AIDS Clinical Trials (IMPAACT) Group, HIV Treatment Scientific Committee. In that capacity, I have worked in close collaboration with the pharmaceutical industry, leading the design and implementation of Phase I/II pharmacokinetic and safety studies of new antiretrovirals for adolescents, children and infants to be conducted in the US and internationally. These studies are done in close collaboration with other members of IMPAACT and diverse pharmaceutical companies, such as Schering Plough and Merck for IMPAACT P1071-vicriviroc in treatment experienced children and adolescents, Tibotec Pharmaceuticals-Janssen for IMPAACT 1090, etravirine in children and recently with GSK-ViiV for IMPAACT P1093, a phase I/II study on the new integrase inhibitor, dolutegravir. The dolutegravir study is a very successful registrational trial that enabled ViiV the necessary data for simultaneous submission to the FDA for approval in adults and children 12 years and older, culminating a successful collaboration between academia and industry. I have over 30 peer reviewed publications in the area of HIV Medicine, Tuberculosis and Malaria and have presented my work at numerous conferences worldwide.
