- Steven J. Hughes, MD. is the Edward M. Copeland, III Endowed Professor of Surgery at the University of Florida Health. Dr. Hughes is also the Chief of Surgical Oncology and Vice Chair of General Surgery. He received his undergraduate education at the University of Minnesota. He attended Mayo Medical School, graduating in 1993, and then completed a residency in General Surgery at the University of Michigan Hospitals in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He also completed a NCI funded Research Fellowships in Surgical Oncology and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship, also at Michigan.
Dr. Hughes clinical expertise focuses on the area of minimally invasive approaches to pancreato-biliary diseases including the performance of laparoscopic pancreatoduodenectomy. His current research interests focus on unraveling paracrine signaling within the pancreatic cancer microenvironment that renders pancreas cancer immunologically “cold.” His laboratory has been continuously funded for over 20 years. Dr. Hughes is the author of over 175 peer reviewed scientific publications. He serves on 3 scientific journal editorial boards and is editor of the text Operative Techniques in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, currently in its second edition.
