Summary
- As the Simons Chair of Medicine at Stony Brook University School of Medicine, Dr. Yang brings a remarkable blend of clinical expertise, research acumen, teaching skill and leadership experience to the position. He oversees the largest department within the School of Medicine, covering a broad residency and fellowship training program and nine clinical divisions, including centers of excellence in Cardiology, Gastroenterology and Hematology/Oncology.
An internationally renowned physician-scientist with a focus on the understanding and treatment of gastrointestinal malignancies, Dr. Yang also is a pioneer in the cloning and characterization of Krüppel-like factors (KLFs), a group of proteins with important physiologic functions. One of the KLFs that Dr. Yang's group identified, KLF4, has gained significant attention due to its ability to convert somatic cells to induced pleuripotenti stem cells (iPSC) with remarkable therapeutic potential.
Dr. Yang comes to Stony Brook from Emory University School of Medicine, where he served as the R. Bruce Logue Professor of Medicine and the Director of the Division of Digestive Diseases. Previously, he held clinical and teaching positions at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.
His goals at Stony Brook include broadening the scope of the department to better serve both the residents of Suffolk County and the surrounding community hospitals with the most advanced medicine available. In addition, he plans to integrate its existing strengths — excellent clinical programs and superb research facilities in a university setting — to grow the translational research program.
