Summary
- Dr. William (Bill) Basco, MD, MS is Professor and Chair, Department of Pediatrics at University of Tennessee Health Science Center-Chattanooga, and Pediatrician-in-Chief for the Children’s Hospital at Erlanger as of October 1, 2024. Previously, he had served on the faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), in Charleston, SC. He completed his medical school training at Louisiana State University in New Orleans, his pediatric residency at MUSC, and an academic general pediatric fellowship at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Md. Between 2013 and 2024, he served as the Director of the Division of General Pediatrics at MUSC. He also served as the Associate Dean of Continuing Medical Education at MUSC from 2022 to 2024.
His early career research focused on the medical school selection process, including the relationship between medical school admission practices on the candidacy of women, minority, and rural medical school applicants. Since 2006, his research has focused on pediatric prescribing errors, with funding from AHRQ to evaluate pediatric medication errors and HRSA for opioid prescribing. He has been PI on research grants from AHRQ and HRSA and as a site PI or lead pediatrician on awards from AHRQ, the CDC, SC Medicaid, SC Dept of Health and Environmental Control, and Purdue Pharma. His AHRQ-supported research focused on pediatric ambulatory prescribing errors. He has extensive experience with HRSA-funded program grants, having obtained grants totaling > $4 million to first begin (2010) and later expand (2020) the primary care pediatrics residency at MUSC.
He currently collaborates with investigators in the Master of Public Health program at University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, the Department of Public Health Sciences at Clemson University, and the Divisions of General Pediatrics and Pediatric Hospital Medicine at the Medical University of South Carolina.
