• William Nelson, MD, is a retired psychiatrist living in Sedona, AZ, with a subspecialty in geriatric psychiatry. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of Connecticut from 1972 to 1975 after graduating from the West Virginia University School of Medicine in 1972. Dr. Nelson served as the Chief Medical Officer at Riverview Psychiatric Center from 2002 until 2017, and previously held academic positions, including Professor of Psychiatry at Dartmouth, Professor and Chair of Psychiatry at Mercer University School of Medicine, and associate professorships at the University of Connecticut and West Virginia University. His scholarly contributions include several publications in reputable journals, focusing on topics such as grief management, primary care and suicidal patients, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, with his work on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in depression widely cited. He was honored as a Distinguished Life Fellow by the American Psychiatric Association in 2015.
