  • Dr. Anne Marie Lennon, MD, PhD, is the Jack D. Myers Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC. She is internationally recognized for her expertise in gastroenterology, in particular in early cancer detection and the management of precancerous pancreatic cysts.​

    Dr. Lennon earned her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1996 and completed a PhD at University College Dublin in 2004. Her postgraduate training included internal medicine residencies at Mater Misericordiae Hospital in Dublin, and the Cleveland Clinic, followed by fellowships in gastroenterology in Edinburgh and advanced endoscopy at Johns Hopkins University.​

    She joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2010, where she held several leadership roles, including Director of the Multidisciplinary Pancreatic Cyst Clinic and Director of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology. Dr. Lennon has co-authored major clinical guidelines on pancreatic cyst management and led the development of molecular diagnostic tools for pancreatic cysts. She was also a key contributor to CancerSEEK, a multi-analyte blood test designed to detect multiple types of cancer at early stages.​

    Dr. Lennon is a Fellow of the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, the American College of Gastroenterology, the American Gastroenterological Association, and the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland. She has authored over 200 publications including in Science, the NEJM, Gut and Science Translational Medicine.​

    In 2024, Dr. Lennon became the first woman to lead the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, overseeing a department with over 1,000 faculty members and nearly $600 million in annual clinical and research revenue.
