He completed his education with fellowships at New York Presbyterian Hospital, both Columbia and Cornell campuses, after earning his MD from Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. He additionally did infant mental health training at Tulane University School of Medicine in New Orleans. He currently lives and works in French-speaking Switzerland where he is Co-Director of Perinatal and Early Childhood Consultation, Training and Research as a senior attending physician in child and adolescent psychiatry and tenured professor of psychiatry at Lausanne University Hospital and Faculty of Biology & Medicine (Lausanne, Switzerland). He resides and retains practice privileges in Geneva, Switzerland. Dr. Schechter has previously held multiple roles in different institutions in the USA, Switzerland, and Germany including Chief of the Stress, Trauma, and Resilience Service at NYU Langone Health's Department of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry, as well as Barakett Associate Professor of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry at at the NYU Grossman School of Medicine, previous to that as Director of Infant and Early Childhood Research at Columbia University Medical Center. He then served as Chief of Pediatric Psychiatry Consult-Liaison, Director of Parent-Infant and Early Childhood Research, and then Deputy Chief of the Child & Adolescent Psychiatry Service at the University of Geneva Hospitals and Faculty of Medicine where he was Senior Lecturer. His work has continually focused on psychotherapy, trauma, and parent-child mental health. Dr. Schechter has contributed to numerous publications, including works on trauma-exposed children and the intergenerational transmission of posttraumatic stress. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Child & Adolescent Psychiatry and the American Psychiatric Association.
